These days, people are looking for more and more activities to keep them busy. After all, we’re all stuck at home, so it’s a great time to start a hobby. While some individuals are learning a new language, others are enjoying cooking or crafting. But one of the most popular social distancing past times is gardening.
Lots of people are getting out to work in their gardens. That includes seeing what they can dig up. But any time you plant something, pests could become be a problem. When uninvited guests show up, you need a method to get rid of them. Sometimes, those can have unintended consequences.
That’s what happened to Jessica Ellis
Like so many people right now, Jessica Ellis is trying to start a garden. She wants to focus on produce, including zucchinis. But where she lives, there’s an infestation of pill bugs, something she knew she had to deal with.
She put trays of beer in the soil
Since these insects are attracted to beer, this method works quite well. Once they try to drink it, they fall in. From there, they drown, sparing the plants from damage.
It was working
At first, Ellis felt like the traps were working. When she checked on them in the morning, they were full to the brim with bugs. So, to her, the process had been a success.
But soon, the beer trays started moving
It wasn’t too long before Ellis realized something was off. During the day, they were fine. But then she’d go to bed only to wake up the next morning to find the trays weren’t where she left them.
Where’d they go?
Initially, Ellis didn’t have any idea where they were. But after searching, she finally found them. As it turns out, the trays were in a blueberry bush. Still, she couldn’t figure out how they got there.
She tried to think of an explanation
Ellis thought there had to be some random explanation. Perhaps the wind had blown the trays over and into the blueberry bush. After all, there was a lot of debris on the ground.
But that didn’t make much sense
The next morning, Ellis came out to her plants where she discovered the same thing. The trays were empty and in the blueberry bush. But the previous night, it hadn’t been windy at all.
Then she found the culprit
While Ellis had a lot of “guest visitors” in her garden over the years, this was a new one for her. It turns out alligator lizards had been coming over in the middle of the night. And they were looking for snacks.
They’d been eating the bugs
It looked like the little lizards had been eating the bugs that fell into the beer. But that wasn’t all. They also drank the beer in the containers. When finished, they’d drag the trays over to the blueberry bush where they’d enjoy a nice, sweet dessert.
No more beer
As funny as this story is, Ellis decided she’d stop putting the beer out. Sure, it might’ve been helping her plants but she was worried it wasn’t good for Graham. That’s the name she gave the lizard. He’s sure to be disappointed but at least he won’t be walking around the garden getting tipsy every night.
If you’re having problems with pests in your garden, you may want to try this method for yourself. Just be sure to watch out for thirsty lizards that might take advantage of the situation.
