Going for a drive in the spring and summer can be really relaxing. It’s nice to see the beauty of the world around you from the air-conditioned safety of your car on the way to the store or to work.

However, you have to be very careful of all the wildlife around you.

Our roads, housing developments, towns, and cities have taken over land that used to belong to creatures large and small.

Often times, especially if you live in a heavily wooded area, you’ll get some unexpected visitors in your backyard. It’s important to give them space, as they are probably passing through, minding their own business. These baby bears, for example, saw this pool and followed their playful instinct to go for a little swim. Just make sure that your pets are kept safely inside while you aren’t watching them, and that you bring them inside at nighttime.

On the road, though, it’s important to keep a diligent eye out for possibly four-legged jaywalkers. No one wants to see roadkill on the side of the road.

When Steve Knoop and some of his friends were out driving, they noticed a suspicious lump in the middle of the road. They thought that they might have encountered some roadkill.

Being the curious good samaritans that they are, they put a pause on their journey to further investigate.

They took out their cameras to document this unlikely happening.

As they get closer, the blurry little blob comes into focus, and we see a precious little fawn.

Normally, when you find a fawn sprawled out like this on the ground, you should leave him or her alone, according to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. When the mother isn’t busy nursing the baby, she is out foraging for food. The fawn instinctually lies motionless on the ground, usually camouflaged in nature by her white spots. If you keep an eye on the fawn and don’t see the mother return within eight hours, that is the time to call the wildlife experts to help you assess the situation.

However, when you see a helpless baby lying in the middle of the road right in the way of oncoming traffic, then there isn’t enough time to wait and see when mama will come back.

That’s why Steve’s friend Paul decided to take matters into his own hands.

He very gently picked up the fawn, who remained limp in his grasp, and swiftly brought her to safety.

All of a sudden, the fawn springs back to life, and bounds into the woods where you can see the flash of white of her mother’s tail. Safe and sound!

While it’s touching to see a mama and baby reunited, it’s also so cute to watch these burly men rejoice in the small victory, the little act of kindness that they just provided for such a small creature. On this day, Paul and Steve are heroes!

This is a lovely reminder that no life is too small to be unworthy of saving. If you have time to call the professionals, that is always the best option. Sometimes, though, you have to make a judgment call. Follow the kindness in your heart that leads you to help out those in need, like this baby fawn, and the world will be a much better place.
