Do you ever wonder if the tools you use are meant to be used other ways or if there are hacks for them? It turns out, some of the simplest items that we use every day, have other uses as well. Some of them are pretty obvious when you think about it, and others are surprising.
Have you ever wondered what the little metal plate on the bottom of your stapler is for?
You probably played with it in class or at work while you were bored, but have you ever tried to figure out why it’s there? It turns out it has a purpose other than entertaining bored student in class.
A video was recently posted to show everyone how to use it. When you watch it and realize what it’s really for, it will be an “Oh, yeah!” moment. Learning how to use it the right way might also make your life a little easier.
In the video, the man uses the stapler to staple a few pages together.
It’s something we have all done several times in our lives. Then, he pushed out the small metal piece, flips it around and staples the papers again. It’s only when he flips the pages over and you can see the backs of the staples that it’s clear what happened.
The regular staples are turned inward on the back. The staples that were placed in the paper after the metal piece was turned are turned outward. You may have never seen staples like this, but as the man in the video explains, this is an older way of stapling documents called pinning.
The outward-facing staples are easier to remove.
You can do it by simply folding the paper slightly and using your fingernail to lift one end of the staple. The other will easily slip out. Regular staples can be harder to remove. You have to use a staple remover or attempt to pry up both ends of the staple.
This usually results in the paper ripping and leaving behind holes. As it turns out, the regular staples that we are all used to are meant to stay in place and hold papers together for long periods of time. The metal piece allows you to put the outward staples into the paper, and they are designed to come out easily.
The outward staples are perfect for pages that you may want to keep together for a little while or documents that you need to keep in order and send to someone but will ultimately need to come apart.
They aren’t as secure as regular staples and come out with no issues.
Who knew there was so much to learn about staples? Now that we have all learned this important lesson, we can go out in the world and share our knowledge with others. This is important stuff. Why isn’t this being taught in schools? So many papers could have been saved by now.
Imagine how much easier life will be now that you don’t have to spend hours trying to get staples from your papers. There’s no reason to carry around a staple remover, either.
That’s one less thing to keep on your desk or pencil pouch.
