Many people are starting to feel that material possessions can weigh us down and by living in a smaller space, we’re able to cut out the unnecessary things in life.

Did you know that going tiny can even help your relationship?

At least, that is how newlyweds Christoph Kaiser and Shauna Thibault feel after their transforming a grain silo into a tiny home.

The couple worked hard and created a gorgeous 366-square-foot tiny home. But they actually hadn’t even planned to live in it at first!

Christoph originally bought the silo off of Craigslist as a place to store his gardening tools. The couple eventually changed their minds and saw the potential the grain silo had for becoming a tiny home.

They then spent the next 18 months creating their dream home. The silo home does not have separate rooms, but instead a downstairs and an upstairs loft.

Christoph got inspired to build the tiny home while his and Shauna’s wedding date approached. He began to draw up plans with his design firm.

During the process, they would have to take some breaks whenever he ran out of money and he then had to go and make money to keep funding the project.

“There’s something about living in a small space that simplifies life,” Christoph told Zillow. “It quiets the mind, in a way.”

His wife, Shauna, said that their friends all were very skeptical when they revealed what their plans were for the silo. She was adamant that it was it is not an experiment but instead their new lifestyle. They absolutely love it!

Christopher added:

“What can you live in and still have a sense of home? It’s easy to cram all the parts that you need to live in something. It’s easy to build it, even — relatively speaking. … The real challenge is to end up with a piece of architecture that actually feeds your soul, as opposed to draining it.”

The house was especially tricky because they had to configure how they’d fit a home into the curved space of the silo. It was a little tough fitting appliances that were designed with a 90-degree angle in mind but they managed it!

The tiny home also features a giant door that gives them unlimited access to the outdoors. It allows for a very fluid living between the indoors and outdoors for the couple.

Christoph explained to Zillow the benefits of unlimited outdoor space. He said:

“Whether you’re sitting inside and have this 10-foot-rolling door open and you just have a view you can experience … or you’re outside enjoying it directly, I think it was definitely something we considered as part of the floor plan.”
