Car horns might prevent accidents, but they can also be extremely annoying. One man experienced this truth as he navigated the parking lot. He decided to approach the car responsible for all the racket, but he never expected what he would find.
David Herman lives with his wife, Elizabeth, in British Columbia. One day, after he had completed a swim at Beban Park, David was getting ready to go home. As he left the pool area, he heard an awful sound – one long, seemingly endless beep. Elizabeth shared 0n Facebook that the noise was “a really loud and continuous car horn coming from the parking lot.”
We all find these alarms annoying, and David was no exception. He immediately set about finding the car responsible for all the noise. When he finally located the car, this man could not believe his eyes.
There was a dog honking the horn! David was completely confused. “At first he [thought] there was a person sitting in the front seat of the car leaning on the horn,” Elizabeth explained. But as he got closer, David saw the unmistakeable face of a dog.
He couldn’t believe it! Where had this dog learned such behavior? This man had never seen an animal use human technology like this.
David crept closer to the car. Elizabeth mentioned that “as he got closer he could see the dog’s paw pushing on the horn.” The dog was pushing his paw against the horn the entire time, never wavering no matter how close David got to the car.
As the man pressed his camera against the window, the dog hardly seemed to notice him. Presumably this pup was waiting for his owner. It wasn’t hard for David to understand why the dog was so frustrated – pets love going to the park. Watching his owner head for the grass while he was stuck in the car was probably torture for this pup – even if he did have enough air to breathe.
David knew that the noise would not end until the dog lifted his paw, so he set a new goal. Elizabeth posted that “he stopped filming and tried to distract the dog to get him to take his paw off the horn, which the dog eventually did.”
So it was a small victory. The dog was still waiting – impatiently – but the horrific noise had stopped! Peace was returned to the parking lot. When David got home that night, he had one funny story to share with his wife.
This silly story shows how intelligent animals really are – they can pick up on our behavior, even when we don’t realize it.
