It’s been a few months now since Zeus the cat had to say goodbye to one of his best friends, a dog named Sam who lived under the same roof with him and their owner Emma up until recently when Sam tragically passed away.
Everyone was obviously heartbroken, especially Zeus who had formed quite the bond with the dog over the years.
Although throughout history, cats and dogs have typically had a very antagonistic relationship, it isn’t necessarily always the case. In rare occasions, the two species are not only able to live harmoniously together, but can even end up becoming very good friends. This is exactly what happened between Zeus and Sam, whose unusual relationship defied all odds.
Although they showed their love for each other in different ways, it’s always beautiful when a dog and cat can get along.
In an interview with The Dodo, owner Emma Catanzarite elaborated on the situation:
“Zeus always tried to cuddle with Sam and play with him, but Sam was always uninterested. Zeus loved to tease him all the time.”
For the most part, Zeus just liked to be close to the dog. While most times it is the cats that are the more independent of the two species, in this case, the tables were definitely turned.
Sam’s simple tolerance of the cat was his own way of showing he cared.
Unfortunately, nothing lasts forever, and it was clear that when Sam passed away, Zeus missed him dearly.
“Zeus seemed really lonely after Sam passed away,” Catanzarite said.
“He followed my mom around a lot more during the day and he meowed a lot after he died like he was looking for him. The day Sam died, we had him wrapped in a blanket and my mom came in the room to find Zeus sleeping on top of him, like he finally got the chance to cuddle with him.”
Even months later, it appears Zeus still hadn’t forgotten about his long lost companion, as seen in a heartwarming video captured by Emma.
When Zeus found Sam’s collar laying on a shelf in the house, he found a touching way to reconnect with the dog.
“I saw Zeus sniffing by the bookshelf and then he jumped up and sat right by the collar,” Catanzarite said. “It made me so sad seeing how happy he was to find it and finally smell Sam again.”
The scent on the collar reminded Zeus of Sam and allowed him to relive all the happy memories they shared together. He started to cuddle with the collar, and happily roll around just like his buddy was there once again.
Emma even thinks it might have allowed Zeus to begin to heal his broken heart.
“He seemed so happy when he discovered it,” Catanzarite said. “I think it might have helped him.”
Although no one will ever be able to bring Sam back, Zeus now knows exactly where to go whenever he wants to smell and be reminded of his old friend.
