They are loyal and effortlessly amusing. We can always count on them even in a life-and-death situation.

In fact, there are canines who would risk their lives for humans. Just like this one.

A four-year-old Belgian Malinois has put his life at stake several times.

His name is Kuno and he served with British special forces in Afghanistan.

He had been through a lot during those times. And when the British special forces were fighting against Al Qaeda, he even suffered excruciating injuries.

As he was supporting the British troops, lots of life-threatening situations also happened.

Because of this canine’s bravery, lots of people were saved from insurgents.

When not one of the troops was able to move without sustaining casualties, Kuno courageously attacked a gunman who injured his hind legs with a gun. Though he was already injured, he still did everything he could by throwing himself at the gunman. He kept attacking until the threat was equalized.

Kuno’s valor did no go unnoticed. In fact, he received the acknowledgment that he deserves.

He’s been awarded the highest award an animal can receive for their courage during a fight – the Dickin Medal.

Jan McLoughlin from the PDSA veterinary charity even expressed how heroic Kuno’s action was during that deadly combat.

“His actions that day undoubtedly changed the course of a vital mission, saving multiple lives in the process. And despite serious, life-changing injuries, he performed his duty without faltering,” he said.

As they deeply appreciated Kuno’s bravery and devotion to duty, they wholeheartedly awarded him such a huge acknowledgment.

Sadly, because of the severity of the injury in his legs, he had to undergo several operations. One of his rear paws had to be amputated, too, to prevent him from a life-threatening infection.

Despite all the hardships he has faced, Kuno was able to recover. He has also become the first U.K. Military Working Dog to have a custom-made prosthetic limb.

According to PSDA, he is “in good spirits and health” – which is good news.

“I’m delighted that Kuno will receive the PDSA Dickin Medal. It is a testament to his training, tireless bravery, and devotion to duty which undoubtedly saved lives that day,” British defense secretary Ben Wallace said.

“I am very proud of the role our military working dogs play on operations at home and abroad. Kuno’s story reminds us of the lengths these animals go to keep us all safe,” he added.

Kuno is the 72nd recipient of the Dickin Medal since December 1943. Now that’s he has retired, his kindness and bravery will never, ever be forgotten.

The fact that he risked his life for the safety of humans, he deserves all the love and best things in the world.
