A group of dedicated wild horse advocates happened upon a pony stuck in the mud. Luckily for the horse these devotees had ropes, wenches and a couple four-wheelers. The group made huge efforts to lift the free-roaming filly out of the muck. And in doing so, created an uplifting video that is helping spread awareness for these majestic creatures roaming our beautiful countryside.

This wild horse needed help and fortunate for her a group of equine lovers were on the lookout.

The Help Alberta Wildies Society is on a mission to keep Alberta’s Wild Horses roaming free. The group heads out into the Canadian wilderness to do headcounts and keep track of the known bands of wild horses in the Alberta Foothills. They use their Facebook page to document their adventures and show off some of the beautiful horses and magnificent areas that they venture into.

According to their Facebook profile,

“HAWS is a dedicated group of Advocates working hard to protect and preserve our free roaming bands of Wild Horses, in the Alberta Foothills, along the Eastern Slopes of the Rocky Mountains.”

Their adventures are usually stunning, and filled with the timeless beauty of nature, but it’s not every day that their outings turn monumental.

Wild horses or “Wildies” as they are called, are untamed horses that roam free in many open spaces around the world.

Matt Blitz, writes in Smithsonian Magazine,

“The wild mustang, free from the constraints of a saddle and spurs, roaming the great expanse with a wind-swept mane, has long been a powerful symbol of the American West, particularly in film and literature.”

The Mustang, is a descendent of the horses brought to America by the Spanish. Often called wild horses, but as they are offspring of domesticated Spanish horses, they are considered feral horses.

As the evening sun turned red in the west, the group from HAWS, tired from a long afternoon searching for herds, turned home to make the trip back to their own personal haciendas. That’s when they spotted the mud-covered horse. The group gathered around the uneasy beast and planned how to rescue her.

They describe the ordeal in a Facebook post,

“You will be able to see how we went through various options until we came up with the right solution to get her free. We always carry lots of gear, and with the power of the winches, were able to pull her out.”

“That hole was likely five feet or six feet deep and surrounded by ice. Clearly she just stepped in the wrong place with no idea that it was so deep.”

They ended up naming the horse, Faith.

“We were totally amazed that with four humans and a whole bunch of straps and such working on her, the only real thing on her mind was eating.”

Youtubers had some great things to say about the rescue of Faith,

“It’s good to see kindness of the people who cares about animals, it really warms the heart for everyone!”

“It’s always nice to see humans treat wild animals with kindness.”
