The beautiful miracle of birth can bring out an array of overwhelming emotions. But for one husband, the tears were not about seeing his son for the first time.

The reason this husband cried at the birth of his son was that he saw something that he hadn’t seen in far too long. It was a sight as beautiful to him as his newborn son. He had been waiting for it for as long as he had been waiting for his son to be born. The sight of it was merely too much to comprehend.

The birthing photographer, Kristie Perez, captured the emotional moment when the husband caught sight of his wife’s face. When she later told him that she had captured him crying at the sight of his son, he revealed the true reason for his tears. Kristie knew that she had to share it with the world. She posted the images of the birth and the story on a Love What Matters page:

“He helplessly watched his wife vomit profusely for 285+ days. He witnessed her lose 30 pounds in pregnancy not being able to nourish herself due to Hyperemesis Gravidarum & preeclampsia.

She was hospitalized 4 times for dehydration throughout her pregnancy. Ate more dinners on the front steps of their home than he could count because any scent literally made her ill.”

“After months of simply being there for her as much as possible, he supported her during birth. I told him I captured him crying seeing his son and he said, ‘That’s not why I was crying.’

Puzzled, I asked what he meant.

He teared up again and said, ‘This is the first time I have seen her smile in 10 months.'”

The depth of this husband’s true feelings of empathy for his wife is evident in his display of pure emotion. The love and support of her husband gave her strength and helped her to carry on.

To all of the brave mothers out there, don’t underestimate how truly strong you are to go through pregnancy and birth, especially difficult ones. To face such enormous obstacles with a smile is one of the noblest feats a human can accomplish.

Pregnancy and birth require a woman to dig deep inside of herself and to do things that she often feels are impossible. The reason this husband cried at the birth of his son was that he witnessed the impossible month after month as his wife persevered. His awe of the extraordinary obstacles that she had overcome spilled out into the birthing room that day.

Husbands, while you may never fully know what your wife went through to bring your baby into the world, you can support her. By merely respecting her courage and determination, she will feel loved and valued by you. That is all she needs.
