In general, cats are good at finding their way home if they’re lost. They often return after just a few days or weeks.
Owners are often told to leave the cat’s litter box and food on the porch. The cat can then find their way home by using their sense of smell. Most lost cats return.
One day in 2005, Janet Adamowicz, like so many pet owners, couldn’t find her cat. The 5-year-old tabby, named Boo, was missing.
A Pet Owner’s Fears
Adamowicz spoke to SWNS TV and described Boo’s behavior, explaining that,
“Boo was very lively as a young kitten and enjoyed the outdoors and adventuring—but would always return home.”
Adamowicz was scared and upset. She didn’t know where her cat could have wandered off to.
She took all of the necessary steps to track down her cat. She hung up signs and paid for an ad in the newspaper. As a result, Adamowicz got many phone calls about her cat. Some of her neighbors believed that they had found her cat.
Unfortunately, they hadn’t actually found Boo. They had simply found another cat.
Because Boo had been gone for so long, Adamowicz thought she had no choice but to give up looking. She had simply lost all hope.
Life Goes On
Next, Adamowicz decided that she would adopt other cats. She owned several cats after she had stopped looking for Boo.
Even though the other cats kept Adamowicz busy, she didn’t forget about Boo. She missed having Boo around and wondered where she could be.
As the years became more than a decade, Adamowicz accepted the fate that Boo might not be out there anymore.
Then, something amazing happened. Adamowicz would never have expected this.
A Surprise Call
One day, 13 years after Boo had gotten lost, Adamowicz got a phone from a veterinarian located just 40 miles from her home.
The vet said that Adamowicz’s cat had been found. Boo had been brought in after a woman found the feline near her home.
At the time, Adamowicz had two cats, Ollie and Tessie. She told the veterinarian that it wasn’t her cat because both of her cats were at home with her.
She was confused because her cats were obviously safe. There was no reason that somebody would have turned her cats in.
Amazing Luck
Next, the veterinarian shared some important information with Adamowicz. She explained that, according to the cat’s microchip, her name was Boo.
Adamowicz was a little bit confused since her cat had been gone for so long. How could this be her Boo?
Well, thanks to that microchip, Boo and Adamowicz were able to be together again.
Microchips are small devices that are placed under a pet’s fur and then linked to the owner’s contact information. When a lost pet’s microchip is scanned, the owner is contacted, and they are reunited.
Boo was only five years old when she got lost. Now, she is 17-years-old.
Reunited
When Adamowicz went to pick Boo up from the veterinarian, the cat still remembered her. She warmed right up to her owner.
As soon as Boo came back home, she became Adamowicz’s shadow all over again.
It’s a wonder that Boo survived in the wild for so long. She must have had plenty of nice people on her side to feed her.
Plus, Boo was in great health! She was slightly dehydrated but had no major health issues.
Adamowicz probably didn’t see this happy ending coming, but she was definitely happy to be reunited with her cat again.
