Children are naturally active. They love playing around and exploring their environment, trying to learn everything they could.
Martin Pistorius was once like that. However, after he came home from school one day, he was suddenly unable to walk or talk. His muscles weakened and his life changed drastically.
Martin was completely healthy, but suddenly came home from school one day not feeling well.
Growing up as a healthy boy, Martin was just like every other kid. Unfortunately, after that day, he was just unable to get back to his usual ways.
Martin’s doctors diagnosed his condition as a neurodegenerative disease. It’s an umbrella term for a wide range of conditions that primarily target and affect the neurons in the brain. They told everyone that Martin was simply unaware of everything that goes around him. The family was told to take him home and keep him comfortable there for the rest of his life.
And his parents did just that. Each morning, his father would wake up at 5 am to get him dressed. He’d load Martin in the car to take him to the special care center where he’d stay for the rest of the day.
After 8 hours, he’d pick him up. Once home, he’d bathe Martin, feed him, and put him in his bed to sleep. Every two hours, he’d wake up to turn him so that he wouldn’t end up with painful bed sores. The family’s routine remained the same for several years.
Everyone thought he was unaware of his surroundings.
It was sad and Martin felt hopeless about his condition. He felt like there was no chance to escape and that nobody’s coming to rescue him, let alone know that he’s actually there.
During the whole 10 years that he was like that, everyone else assumed he was unable to know his surroundings. People would come to him to share their deepest secrets.
Martin later was able to share dark things that happened to him while it was assumed he didn’t know what was happening around him. He even had his own mother spoke words she later regretted saying so much, though Martin didn’t hold it against her and understood her true meaning behind them.. And during those times, he became known as the “Ghost Boy”.
Little did they know that Martin was basically trapped in his physical body. While he couldn’t talk or walk, he was actually cognitively aware of his environment.
One day everything changed when a nurse noticed a small detail everyone else missed.
One day, a physical therapist turned Martin’s life around. Virna Van Der Walt saw something in the boy that everyone else missed. Seeing Martin, she knew there was someone inside.
After a series of tests, it was found out that Martin could actually communicate and that made a huge difference in his life. His mind worked slowly but it has definitely gotten stronger to the point that he was able to talk through a computer-aided device.
Eventually, Martin went to college. He was also able to learn how to drive and in 2008, he met Joana whom he considers as the love of his life. They got married and they’re now happily live with each other.
Despite everything that has happened to him, Martin has no animosity towards her mother or the people that took advantage of him. There wasn’t even a shadow of anger. He knows that his mother was only upset and frustrated with the situation.
Though his mother was in tears with the words she spoke to him, Martin responds with only love.
Instead of hate and grudge, Martin speaks about kindness, respect, and compassion. He values faith, love, and the power of the mind. For him, everyone should never stop dreaming. His words are truly inspirational.
