Back in 2009, a middle-aged woman named Susan Boyle famously taught the world that you can’t judge a book by its cover.

But here we are, still doing exactly that.

Take Lin Yu-Chun, for example. The 24-year-old didn’t give the appearance for the voice he was about to unleash on everyone.

At first glance, Lin even appeared to be much younger than he actually was.

Of course, looks can be deceiving.

And anytime we’re proven wrong about our initial impressions, that’s when the real fun starts!

When Lin told the judges that he’d be covering Whitney Houston’s perennial classic, “I Will Always Love You,” it’s not hard to imagine their inward groans at the thought of yet another Whitney wannabe butchering one of her songs on their show.

The fact is there’s just not very many people who can do justice to Whitney’s gorgeous voice.

Yet, it turns out Lin is the one person in the world who possesses something that most people don’t – the uncanny ability to sound like Whitney herself! And that’s no small exaggeration.

The audition starts off with Lin squinting his eyes and being very expressive with his face, but as soon as Lin belts out the eerily familiar-sounding high notes, he has fans of the 80’s pop princess scrambling to hear more.

It’s as if he brought Whitney back to life!

No one could have ever imagined a voice like that to come out of him.

This little thing called the Internet suddenly catapulted him to fame!

Instead settling for one million stars, Lin’s audition cover of “I Will Love You” gained over ten million views on YouTube. Just like Susan Boyle before him, Lin became an unlikely, but very likable, celebrity overnight.

What really makes Lin so appealing to the masses is his ordinariness. He even sheepishly described himself in an interview with Time as the chubby boy next door:

“I’m just like the chubby little boy next door. I used to have absolutely no confidence in my appearance, but now I think, ‘This is me.’ I want to be myself.”

Thanks to the viral video, this nondescript young man, who news outlets dubbed “Taiwan’s Susan Boyle,” soon found himself jet-setting around the world. He even caught the attention of Ellen Degeneres, who interviewed him on her show!
