With dozens of home makeover shows on HGTV, everyone has a keen obsession with redoing different aspects of their homes.
Not everyone has the money to spend thousands on their remodel, but luckily, that doesn’t mean that they can’t have a beautiful new bedroom or kitchen. In fact, more and more DIY bloggers and YouTubers are sharing ways to spend as little as possible while making over their homes.
Ashley Green, a mother and preschool teacher with a passion for green living, has a video that shows how she remodeled her kitchen for a mere $100.
If you’ve ever watched an episode of House Hunters or Fixer Upper, you know that most people want to tackle the kitchen first thing. Whether the cabinets or countertops are outdated, there is always something to be redone in an old kitchen.
For Ashley, she was able to make her entire kitchen look brand new using a bit of paint. She did this to save money, but also to be eco-friendly.
She kept the remodel green because she didn’t have to send her cabinets to a landfill and she saved gas and energy by not purchasing and installing new cabinets.
To keep this project under $100, she purchased a Rus-Oleum kit to repaint her cabinets. The Rust-Oleum’s website says that the kit “is an easy way to transform the look of your old and outdated cabinetry. There is no stripping, no sanding, no priming. In just a few simple steps, anyone can quickly and easily transform their outdated kitchen and bath cabinetry with beautiful, durable and professional results.”
The kit comes with a DVD instruction video, wood cleaner, paint stirrers, and applicators, a foam roller, top coat, two cans of bond coat, and two cans of glaze finish. Ashley used the Espresso color for her project and actually didn’t use the glaze.
She needed a few more supplies to finish things while using this kit that she suggests other use. She purchased 2-inch foam brushes, 3-inch foam brushes, rubber gloves, Rust-Oleum metallic spray paint for her hinges, painters taper, sander, 2-inch synthetic angled brushes, sponges, a drill to remove the cabinets, and a drop cloth to put the cabinets on.
Before she got to sanding or painting, Ashley actually washed her cabinets off. It might seem strange to wash wood cabinets with soap and water but as Ashley explains, it makes perfect sense!
In her video, you can see exactly how she takes the cabinets off, cleans them, and then gets to work. She needed to degloss the cabinets to get the old shine off before she could put any new coat of paint on it. She suggests wearing gloves while doing so!
“You go with the grain of the wood using the scrubbing pads that they include. You want to make sure you get in all the little nooks and crevices of your cabinets. Don’t forget the sides!”
You can see Ashley work through the night in parts of her video to apply the bond coat on her cabinets. After all that hard work, it is incredible to see the finished product in her kitchen.
