Produced by Film Graphics Inc. for the United States Navy, the video was released in 1967 for training purposes. Intended to educate young naval officers on proper dating etiquette, the video starts with “don’ts”, coupled with sarcastic voiceover.
If you’re not careful, you’ll be led to believe that this instructional material actually condones such poor treatment of women. But if you’re quick to catch on, you’ll be laughing during the first few minutes.
How horrifying would it be if these tips were actually given in all seriousness? (Thankfully, after the hilarious, sarcastic bits come the really good ones which you’ll love.)
Be late.
“Show her you’re a busy, important person and you’re not too interested in her.”
Laugh it off.
“Aww, c’mon. Don’t be a square.”
And of course, this excuse:
“There’s just not enough time for good manners.”
Considering this was dated way back during the late 60s, its content and main message still rings true today: make a good impression by treating a woman as your equal, demonstrating proper manners like waiting for her to be seated before sitting down yourself, opening doors for her, and so forth.
You’ll surely appreciate the video’s main point which is highlighted in the description,
“Show respect for your date and her reputation and she will respect you. Success with brunettes or blondes, or just about anybody is built upon respect. And being a gentleman is to command respect. How to succeed with brunettes? Be a gentleman.”
You’re probably a bit confused as to why the U.S. Navy even needed such a video, especially during the Vietnam War! Well, the explanation is remarkable.
The military’s aim wasn’t just to form the best officers. They wanted to be sure they were shaping perfect gentlemen, too.
It really does not take much to be a gentleman.
Don’t be afraid to stand out and be called names – prove that gentlemen aren’t “a dying breed” as most pessimists tend to believe. In a world where technology has taken over and feminism and equality have been ridiculously taken out of context, it’s refreshing to see this type of content still reaching thousands across the globe.
