About 8 million animals enter the shelter every year. Out of that 8 million, roughly 2.6 million dogs and cats are killed annually because they cannot get a home. What makes it worse is that these shelter animals are having to compete against the market of pure-bred animals, even though the cost of pure-bred animals are exponentially higher than that of a shelter animal.

Now, we all know that having a pet is a huge responsibility, one that requires much more than just throwing out some food and water.

What many may not realize however, is just how life-changing living up to that responsibility can be – not just for you, but for your pets too! Your animals know the difference between “basic care” and “feeling loved” and like their human owners, they respond to the health of their environment. The difference between living in a small kennel or box to having the freedoms of running around in a large, open yard, for example, or just being able to lay down on something that isn’t cold or made of concrete… these seemingly small changes in a pet’s surroundings can create big changes in their health and well-being.

The following photos show the difference an adoption makes on a pet. Hopefully this physical proof will inspire some potential pet-owners to go out and finally give a wonderful animal the home and love it deserves.

Poor baby… But look at the “after” shot… From sad and lonely, to alert and happy. The change is incredible!

Of course, while a loving home is a wonderful start, regular medical care is still a necessity. The Pets for Life team of the Humane Society of United States has spent many years working and collecting data from the nation’s most underserved communities – those that lack affordable and accessible pet care. There’s no doubt that the people in these communities love their pets… but there’s also no denying the need for professional care.

There are nearly 23 million pets living in those communities. Out of those 23 million, 87% of them are not spayed or neutered. Also, out of those 23 million, 77% of them have never seen or been to a vet.

So… feeling inspired yet??
