A person’s first crush is such a pure and innocent thing. Shy looks over pudding cups and endless games of tag— a first crush is our introduction to the romance of this world. For most of us, nothing comes of these childhood romances, but in this story, things came full circle in really amazing way.
Amy Giberson and Justin Pounders met at Sunshine Preschool in St-Petersburgh, Florida, when they were only 3 years old.
The two lovebirds enjoyed chasing each other on the park, building Lego structures, and eating their lunches together. The children enjoyed a sweet romance, and, according to their teacher Diane Twar, were absolutely inseparable.
“They had a blast with each other,” the teacher recalled.
“It was a quiet, bashful romance. They liked each other from afar, it was a young love, like a sweet crush, you know?”
“They insisted on sitting next to each other in our school picture.”
After Amy and Justin’s time together, the two moved on to different schools, and the memories of their romance faded with the years. Flashforward 30 years later, and Justin had been engaged to a woman named Adrianne who was tragically killed in a car accident. He didn’t think he’d ever love again, but when he had finished grieving, he decided to give online dating a try.
While browsing the pictures on Match.com, Justin came across Amy’s profile, and something about her caught his eye.
“I saw her photo and, for whatever reason, was instantly drawn to her,” he told People.
“She just had this great energy, you could tell. I can’t explain it, but I knew I had to get to know this girl.”
Amy describes their first meeting as love at first sight— but, the two still had no idea they had been lovebirds thirty years before.
“Of course, at that point, we still didn’t know we had been pre-K sweethearts, but when we met up and we hugged, it was like I had known him my whole life,” said Amy.
“When I first saw him, I felt that I was staring at the man I was going to marry.”
They dated for nearly one whole year before making the discovery.
“We were in the car and Justin casually mentioned that he loved my name because he had a crush on a girl named Amy in his preschool,” she told People. “Then I joked to him, ‘Well, it’s not me, so I don’t want to hear about her!'” Later, when the couple realized they had attended the same preschool, Amy realized the crush might actually be her, after all!
“We asked our parents to dig up any preschool photos they had,” she continued.
“Justin’s mom found a photo of the two of us together and I just started crying, I was ecstatic. I was the Amy he had liked all those years ago! It was definitely meant to be!”
After their unique love story went viral in 2015, Justin proposed to Amy on a live taping of The View. For the proposal he had toddlers from their former preschool hold up signs that said: “Amy, Will You Marry Me?”
Now, three years later, the happy family has given birth to a baby boy named Conrad.
“It’s weird, though, to think that in 3 years Conrad will be the same age that Justin and I met,” Amy, now 35, told GoodHousekeeping.com.
“Everything that’s transpired in our lives, us coming back together and making this beautiful little person, it’s all very surreal.”
“For Conrad Pounders to exist, it’s been a long journey, but it does feel like everything has come full circle.”
