Were The Queen's Brooches A Coded Insult To Trump?
Do you think she did it on purpose?

Earlier this month, people around the world were eagerly waiting for news about the Queen’s meeting with President Donald Trump.

Although most of the attention was focused on the interaction between the two, a select bunch of people known as “jewel watchers” were entertained by a spectacle of their own. It turns out that the Queen may have been sending a coded message to President Trump through her gorgeous, bejeweled brooches.

Sounds a bit crazy, right? I thought so too until I read all the details. In a series of tweets posted by Twitter user @SamuraiKnitter, the world learned that Queen Elizabeth may have been sending out a few clever snubs in the form of the jewelry she had been wearing.

Before we get started, it’s important to know that royal jewels tend to hold more significance than being simple accessories.

The Queen has certain brooches that she wears to certain events—like the True Lover’s Knot brooch which she’s worn to two royal weddings.

“Additionally,” as Vox explained, “there are multiple brooches that have been given as gifts to Queen Elizabeth or her predecessors by various countries, and which she has subsequently worn— you guessed it— while attending state functions hosted by those countries.”

“Thus it has become generally accepted among jewel watchers that the queen frequently uses her jewels to indicate loyalty and friendship between the UK and other nations.”

So, why do jewel watchers think the Queen used her brooches to snub Donald Trump during her visit?

Well, on the first day of his visit, Queen Elizabeth specifically picked out a brooch given to her by the Obamas during their last visit to England.

It’s a petite flower piece from the 1950s made of 14-karat gold, diamonds, and moss agate.

“The US has given QE jewelry before over the years and I bet her dresser could put hands on any and all of it given five minutes. But she chose the most SENTIMENTAL piece in the collection, the one that was given OUT OF FRIENDSHIP WITH THE OBAMAS AS PEOPLE,” SamuraiKnitter wrote.

“Next day, next brooch,” the Twitter user continued. “This was a day of audiences with people, she does that to maintain the Commonwealth at least one day a week. That day was the King and Queen of Belgium for tea as well. She wore a sapphire brooch. [sic]”

“It’s called the Sapphire Jubilee Brooch, and it was given to the Queen of England as a gift for ruling for eleventy billion (okay, 65). From Canada. You know, who Trump’s been screaming about and insulting. The commonwealth country and one of the UK’s greatest allies. Them.”

Yup, on the second day she wore a brooch given to her on behalf of Canada— whose leader Trump has recently been disparaging in the media.

On the last day of Trump’s visit, Queen Elizabeth wore the most unexpected brooch of them all— the brooch featured in the “Three Queens in Mourning photo”— which her mother wore to her father’s funeral.

Jewel watchers clearly think these brooches were coded snubs towards Trump.
