Children and pets share quite a bit in common: they are both adorable, they are both full of joy, and they both love to play. Nothing is cuter than when these two entities get together.

Because children and pets make a great team, families often adopt young animals for their little ones to play with. This has a number of positive psychological effects for the child. By having a pet, kids learn to treat another being with kindness and care, they learn to become more responsible, and they can practice their social skills even when they are not around any young peers.

But having a pet is about more than just learning and growing. An animal can become a child’s best friend, creating a bond that could never be replaced by another human being. Sometimes a kid just needs an animal pal to interact with.

That was the case for Conway Nelson, a two-year-old boy who lives in Savage, Minnesota. This little kid might be small, but he has already proven to the world that he has a huge heart.

One day Conway and his dad, Chad Nelson, went over to a friend’s house for a playdate. The boy who lived there let Conway in on an awesome game he had come up with. The neighbors next door had a dog, named Dozer, and it wasn’t long before the boy and pup became friends.

Whenever they were both in the backyards of their own homes, they would find a way to play together. The only problem was that a giant wooden fence stood between them. The boy and Dozer could barely see each other between the spaces in the fence, but they still managed to become best friends.

They even developed their own game. The two began to play a modified version of fetch – one where they worked around the fence that separated them. It took a little ingenuity, but soon the two had a system where they could enjoy playtime together despite the tall obstacle.

First, the boy would throw Dozer’s ball over the fence. The pup would wait patiently, and when he saw the ball he would run to catch it in his mouth – just like a regular game of fetch! Next, the tricky part came.

Dozer had to find a way to get the ball back over the fence. Somehow this clever dog spotted a hole in the fence big enough to push the ball through. He would shove the ball back onto the little boy’s side, and it was time for another round.

When Conway came over to play, he decided to try out his hand at the unique version of fetch. He threw the ball over the fence, and sure enough, Dozer brought it right back. What fun!

When Chad witnessed the genius game his son was playing, he couldn’t believe his eyes. He posted a video of the adorable interaction, saying, “A fence can’t stop my two-year-old from playing with his new best friend.”

Conway and Dozer’s video was filmed by Erin Richter, the host of the play date, and it was an instant hit. Within just two days it got over 9.5 million views and 800,000 likes. The Internet just can’t get enough of this dynamic duo.

It is so impressive that this little boy could throw the ball all the way over the fence. He is still young, but he has an incredible amount of discipline and dedication. Conway wanted to be able to play with his newfound friend, so he made it happen.

Erin was delighted to be able to share her child’s game with his new friends, as well as with the world. “My son and Dozer play ever time they are both outside,” she explained to BuzzFeed.

“Dozer would play forever but my son usually stops when the ball gets full of slobber. Sometimes Dozer will bring a new ball over then to keep playing.”
