Patriotism is the bread and butter of America’s heartland, and there was no greater demonstration of this fact than what happened in a small Oklahoma city over the Memorial Day weekend.
Thanks to viral footage from a front door security cam, a UPS driver was seen doing more than just dropping packages on Chelsie Root Ashley’s porch.
He was delivering good old American pride!
With a population of only 790 people, there’s not a lot of things that can escape notice in a community as small as Adair. Eyes are everywhere, people gossip, and when an out-of-towner does something unexpected, you can bet your bottom dollar that everyone is going to talk about it over Sunday supper!
Now that the popularity of doorbell security cameras are on the rise, there’s an even smaller chance that a person’s actions can stay under the radar.
Chelsie was getting ready to start the day with her two children on the Friday before Memorial Day when she heard the doorbell ring. Instead of rushing to see who it was, like people used to do in the old days, she just grabbed her smartphone to look at the live footage.
The mom recognized who it was, but she was surprised when she spotted her UPS driver, a man named Trent, fiddling around with an American flag that was mounted to the side of her porch.
Whereas most delivery drivers are content to quickly hop on and off the truck without so much as a friendly hello, this stand-up guy’s action was so stellar, it totally made Chelsie’s day!
Instead of being angry by the fact that this man was touching her property, she was moved by his actions.
As Chelsie explained to FOX23, he was just trying to fix an obvious wrong, and make it right:
“He noticed my flag was rolled up from all the wind, and he stopped on the way out to take it down.”
This man could have just dropped off Chelsie’s package and continued on with his route, but he took time out of his busy delivery schedule to fix a total travesty.
The American flag represents our freedom, and it holds an even greater meaning during times like these when it feels like our freedoms are being squashed.
That’s why burning the American flag, even in protest, is an unforgivable sin for a lot of folks.
The flag is something that should be able to proudly wave its banner in the wind, and Trent made sure that Chelsie’s flag was free to fly again!
By the time Chelsie managed to run to the front door to thank the UPS driver, he had already driven away.
Thankfully, she had proof of what he had done, and she uploaded the video on social media to help brighten everyone’s day.
She captioned the video, “The hero of today is my UPS driver!!” and it immediately went viral.
“He didn’t know anyone was watching him, but he just did it just to do it. I thought it was so cool what he was doing when no one was looking.”
Hundreds have watched the video on social media, including one anonymous veteran, who ended up shedding some happy tears.
According to Ashley, the vet said: “It makes it worth it when we are gone for a long time. This is what makes it worth it.”
“That made me emotional because its making vets cry. That flag stands for so much, it’s so heavy, and I wanted everyone to know how much we respect our vets. Just something uplifting and positive right now because of everything going on.”
Doorbell security cameras are supposed to help people feel safe, but they’re also pretty brilliant at capturing the most amazing acts of kindness, or in this case, an act born of love for one’s country.
