Five months ago a 47-year-old woman from Utah was declared “missing” when her camping gear and her car were found seemingly abandoned in a parking lot close to the Spanish Fork Canyon.

Since November 25th when her belongings were first found, The Utah County Sheriff’s Office started to conduct an extensive search of the area in the hope to locate the poor woman. From the items they found in her car, they were able to identify her.

Although the authorities couldn’t get hold of any of her relatives, they were able to contact her job. Some of the woman’s co-workers raised their concerns about the woman’s mental health.

They explained to the Sheriff’s officials that she “might struggle with mental health challenges.”

The authorities decided to continue their search on foot and in the air by the use of drones. In the meantime, they had to collect her car and belongings.

The rescue teams continued to search for the missing woman even during the winter months when the temperature was really low, making their work much more difficult.

You have to understand that although the investigation was ongoing, the possibility of finding the woman alive and well in these freezing temperatures had considerably decreased.

Fortunately, last weekend, five months since the woman had initially gone missing, the rescue team had a breakthrough!

With the help of a drone, brought in by a non-profit group, they were able to locate a tent. But, it didn’t go down exactly as you might have imagined. The drone crashed somewhere in the canyon, so the pilot and a police officer volunteered to go and retrieve it.

Well, they didn’t find the drone, but they did discover a tent.

Both men were quite surprised to find a tent in this part of the canyon, but you can imagine their shock when they opened the tent and they saw the missing woman inside.

In their press release, the Sheriff’s office said “This woman, 47, had lost a significant amount of weight and was weak. But she was apparently also resourceful.”

As soon as the woman was ready to answer some questions, she told the authorities that she was living there for some time, eating mainly grass and moss from the nearby river. Passing campers had also given her some food when they came upon her.

After her statement, the authorities said that “We now believe she knowingly chose to remain in the area over the months since November 2020.”
