Who would have thought that through financial challenges, one woman was destined to change the lives of many? Last 2009, Beth Moncel was more than just challenged, she was facing adulthood with lots of student loans to pay while working at the prepared-foods department at Whole Foods.
Instead of being frustrated with her situation, she taught herself to understand how she can find ways to save money and she realized that she can do that by being a wise-spender with her food allowance.
Saving money in mind, she also knew that opting for less nutritious foods won’t be the solution, so instead, she took time to understand how her employer worked on their products – from using all items even left-overs to pricing.
“Working in commercial foodservice taught me to be really mindful of waste, and how to strategically use expensive and inexpensive ingredients in a way that keeps overall meal costs low,”
said Moncel in her interview with MarketWatch.
Now, Moncel is very famous with her blog Budget Bytes which aims to teach people how to be able to cut their grocery bills, create nutritious meals on a budget, and to impart her understanding of how things work. With these insights, one is sure to be better and to test this out, let’s start with slashing your grocery bill!
Moncel teaches us simple tricks on how we can practically reduce what we spend on our grocery shopping.
- Shop your pantry
We often neglect our pantry because it’s easier to list down what we need before we do our grocery shopping but most of the time, this is the reason why we have so many expired ingredients as well. Check your freezer and your pantry, you might be surprised to see that you still have lots of stocks that you’re not noticing.
- Re-proportion your food
Most of the time, our plate consists of meat rather than vegetables. It can be a whole lot cheaper if we’d cut our meat and focus more on our vegetables. Not only do we save but we also become healthier.
- Skip those “Instant” foods
Are you a fan of those pre-made mixtures of food and sauces? How about those veggies with herb-seasonings in it? While it may look easier, it’s not practical. By spending a few minutes adding herbs and olive oil to your veggies, you’d already be able to save money. Plus, creating homemade sauces, dips, and jams are fun and easy!

It’s cool to be in, right? With all the trending superfoods that aim to give you a healthier lifestyle, we are forgetting that we already have the abundance of healthy vegetables at a much cheaper price and not to mention are readily available. You can find hundreds of recipes using cabbage, bell peppers, broccoli, and so much more!
These tips from Beth Moncel are really simple yet very effective. It will take time to practice these but if you get the hang of it, you’ll see just how fun this can be. Being able to be a wise spender without compromising the quality of your food and health is definitely something to learn.
