Cafe owner offers homeless man a job when he walked in and asked for spare change
“A lot of people are saying I’ve been a blessing for him, but at that point, I was the one who needed a blessing,” she said.

A homeless man strolled into Cesia Abigail Baires’ café in 2016 asking for money. What she gave him was so much more.

Baires decided to have a little chat with the man, asking him why he was asking for money. She also told him that nothing she has was given for free. Baires wanted to get to know him.

The man explained that he has to resort to begging and even stealing as it was hard for him to get a job due to his multiple felonies.

Cesia was doing what she can for the cafe to survive. Keeping a business afloat can be difficult but when Marcus entered her café, Cesia said she “felt a connection with him.”

Marcus was doing all he can to get by considering his circumstances so Cesia gave him an opportunity of a lifetime,

“I was short-staffed that day,” Cesia wrote on Facebook. “So I asked him, ‘You want to work? I have a job for you!’ His eyes opened wide and his smile made my day!!!! He said, ‘I’ll do anything for some food.’”

She then gave him a sandwich so he could eat before work, but what Marcus did next was what really touched Cesia. Marcus ate half of it, wrapped the other half then went to a homeless woman and gave the wrapped sandwich to her.

Marcus showed up daily for his 2-hour shift helping to take the trash out and wash dishes.

When he gets paid, Marcus buys food from Cesia. He says it makes him feel good.

“Do something nice for someone today and don’t judge them just because they out there asking for money for we don’t know their situation… some deserve another shot,” Cesia ended her Facebook post.

Marcus hasn’t missed a single 2-hour shift in the 2 weeks he’s been working for Baires.

“Some restaurants wouldn’t even let you use their restrooms,” Cesia told CBS News. “I don’t judge someone on how they look — go use it. I do not treat [homeless people] any different.”

Marcus’ story went viral but Cesia says it was the man who blessed her.

“A lot of people are saying I’ve been a blessing for him, but at that point I was the one who needed a blessing,” she said.

Marcus has been homeless since he was 16. It’s been a difficult life for the man but it’s not too late.

Cesia and Marcus have decided to set apart 10% of his salary so he could save up.

Who knows, he may get promoted someday.

“Just like Marcus, I had my help,” Cesia explained. “I had plenty of people to help make it to where I am today. They believed I could do it. People need to have someone believe in them.”

Sometimes, taking a chance on someone, regardless of how they look, can be advantageous for both parties. Exercise caution but let kindness prevail. Some people deserve a second, and even third chance in life.
